10 Things to Do to Be a Great Daughter

As a woman, one of the best things you can do for your parents is to be a good daughter. Regardless of the life challenges you're currently going through, you should always strive to make them happy even as you chase your dreams. All your parents want is for you to be happy. This is why they pushed you through school and ensured you went to college and graduated. They have always wanted the best for you.

As their daughter, it is natural for you to also want the best for them. You do not want to disappoint them and hope that you make them happy always. While it’s not possible to make people happy at all times, there are certain things you can do as a daughter to ensure that your parents are always proud of you.

How to Be a Good Daughter                           

1.    Talk to Them As Often As You Can

Every parent wants their daughter to trust them enough to talk to them when they are happy and when they are feeling low. Therefore, don’t be afraid to call your parents when you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders the same way you would call them when happy. Share your achievements, both big and small. Your parents are your biggest cheerleaders and it makes them happy to feel involved.

2.    Accept Their Gifts

Once you start working and earning your keep, it is okay to still accept help from your parents. Allow them to buy you gifts and pay your bills if they want to. They do not do it out of duty but out of love for you. It makes them happy to know that you are okay.

When they give you gifts, it is okay to think of something thoughtful to give them too. They will feel as good as you do when you receive gifts.

3.    Lead a Happy Life

According to studies, the well being of any parent is somewhat dependent on the life their child leads. This is because your problems are your parent’s problems. It worries them when you are not happy and leading the kind of life they would want you to have. Therefore, do as much as you can to ensure you lead a happy life. It makes them happy and gives them peace of mind knowing you're doing okay.

4.    Allow Them to Help

Wondering how to be a good daughter? Why not let your parents help you when they want to? According to research, parents are generally happy when they are allowed to help out their grown children. It could be helping you with an unpaid bill or babysitting a few times a week as you work. When they see you doing well because they helped you, it makes them feel good and close to you.

Whenever they do something good for you, remember to tell them how much you appreciate what they do and how much you appreciate them as your parents. Make sure they know that you appreciate how much they struggle to ensure you are okay and that you do not take it for granted.

5.    Do Not Parent Your Parents

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is try to parent your own parents. Remember that they have been in this world longer than you have and thus know how to run their lives just fine. Parenting your parent makes them feel as though you're disrespectful and don’t trust their judgment on different matters. As much as you may be trying to help them, ensure you are not taking away their sense of independence and authority as your parents.

6.    Have Patience with Them

One of the best things you can do for your parents is to be patient with them. This is how to be a good daughter as it makes them feel loved and appreciated. As they grow older, you need to understand that they become slower or may do things differently from the way they used to. Therefore, be patient with them. Remember that they raised you and were very patient with you. It is only fair to extend the same to them as they grow older.

7.    Spend Quality Time with Them

No matter the distance between the two of you, is to ensure you create time to visit your parents and spend quality time with them. This should not only be on holidays. It makes them happy when their daughter shows up on a random day to spend a few days with them at home.

8.    Be Available For Them

While they may not say it often, your parents too would want you to be there for them when they need you to be. If they are going through a hard patch, make time for them and make them feel appreciated and cared for. Sometimes, your parents may be going through some hard times but will not tell you. Always make a point to check up on them to see how they are doing. Let them know you're always available if they need you.  

9.    Be Helpful 

If you live at home, you can be a good daughter by helping around with house chores. Start by ensuring that your parents don’t have to clean after you. Keep your room tidy and help to keep other areas of the home clean. Help with laundry, make dinner and even set the table. Ensure that you make life easier for your parents when living with them. 10.    Respect Them

You can do everything on this list, but without respecting your parents, nothing else you do matters. When they are talking, you listen and not interrupt them mid-speech. If you have done wrong, apologize and avoid repeating the same mistake again. If they have a curfew, ensure you are home before then. When you are out with friends, call your parents and let them know you're okay. When you show them respect, it can go a long way in strengthening your relationship with them.
