What Is Nystatin Used For?

Nystatin is often used in the treatment of skin infections caused by fungi. This is due to the fact that the medication works to stop the fungus' growth. It comes in a variety of forms, and can be taken as a capsule, tablet, or liquid, to be consumed orally; a pastille, or soft lozenge, which dissolves when inserted into the mouth; or a cream and a tablet that is used by inserting into the vagina; or an ointment, powder, or cream that is applied to the surface of the skin.

How Does It Work?

The medication works by messing with the cell membranes of fungi and yeast. It binds to a substance known as ergosterol (which is vital to fungi's longevity and survival) causing a disruption in the cell membranes. The medication essentially causes holes to develop within the membranes of the fungi or yeast cells, causing the fungi cells to leak out essential constituents, which,as a result, kills and treats the infection.
